Massive fire guts garment factory in Karachi’s export processing zone

KARACHI (92 News) A massive fire broke out at a garment factory in Karachi’s Export Processing Zone on Thursday, prompting a large-scale emergency response from Rescue 1122 and city fire crews.

Officials confirmed that all workers were safely evacuated before the building later collapsed due to the intensity of the flames.

Rescue 1122 said the blaze was reported to its Central Command and Control early in the day, after which a firefighting team, ambulance, and fire engine were immediately dispatched.

As the fire rapidly spread, additional support was summoned, with eleven fire tenders, snorkels, and rescue vehicles joining the operation. Firefighting teams from nearby factories also assisted.

Two firefighters were injured while attempting to contain the blaze, which sent thick clouds of smoke over the area and forced authorities to move nearby residents and workers to safety. Fire brigade officials said falling debris and low visibility made the operation particularly dangerous.

The flames also extended to a neighbouring building, raising fears that two more adjacent units—including a chemical storage warehouse—could be affected. Authorities said the situation remained precarious for several hours.

Efforts to fully extinguish the fire are still underway, with teams working to prevent further spread.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, and officials said updates will be provided once the situation is fully under control.
